7 explosions in a row, gravel sprayed to 5 kilometers away
The volcano erupted at least 7 times in the early hours of yesterday, with ash, smoke and rubble sprayed from the crater to a range of 5 kilometers away. The loud explosion can still be clearly heard several kilometers away. Affected residents were evacuated to the neighboring districts of Yogyakarta and Klaten.
The Indonesian government is anticipating continued active volcanic activity and advised residents living within a 7-kilometer radius of the volcano to evacuate for safety. Mount Merapi, which is more than 2,900 meters high, has remained at the second-highest alert level since it erupted in November last year.
